All volunteer positions receive service credits and all are VIRTUAL with the exception of the Event Coordinator. Be the Star You Are!® will sign forms or, after 15 hours of volunteer time, will write a letter on behalf of the volunteer.


Founded in 1999, the mission of Be the Star You Are!® 501 c3 charity is to empower women, families, and youth through improved literacy, increased positive media messages and tools for living. Be the Star You Are!® has been honored as a TOP RATED non-profit with Great Non Profits and Guidestar for numerous years.

Book Reviewer: Reads books, writes a short review, gets published.


Radio Reporter and Radio Host: Unique opportunity to become a radio reporter and/or host on the award winning Express Yourself! Teen Radio broadcast that airs on Sundays at 3pm PT on the Voice America Empowerment Network. Pre-records via SKYPE every Wednesday from 5-6pm PT. Learn communication skills and talk about what is important to you. Broadcasting since 2011.

Event Coordinator: Ideally this person resides in the San Francisco Bay Area. Plans events to promote BTSYA with volunteer participants.


Event Participants: Usually one day participation at a variety of fun events including fairs, festivals, holiday specials, and book signings.


Radio Guest Coordinator: Researches and books guests for our YA program, Express Yourself! Works with the reporters on coordinating dates and sending reminders.


NewsLetter Assistant: Helps to organize, write, and edit the monthly newsletter, Star Searcher’s Express.


Grant Writer: Researches and writes grants appropriate for BTSYA.


Social Networker: Takes responsibility for sending out news to a special social network such as Facebook, Tumblr, Instagram, etc.


Social Poster: Receives weekly news to post to your individual social networks. (No service credits)


Videographer: Creates short videos showcasing the positive and uplifting in life for our web series, Shine.


Researcher: Finds the facts surrounding the needs of positive media messages and the importance of literacy to decreasing violence. Will research what is needed.


Disaster Relief Coordinator: When a disaster strikes anywhere in the USA, BTSYA mobilizes to ship new books and resources to those in need. This coordinator finds out the “who, what, where, and when” and creates a committee to go into action to help.


Fundraiser: If you enjoy creating fundraising campaigns, this is a fun opportunity to practice your money skills. As a 501 c3 charity, BTSYA relies 100% on individual donations. All fundraising campaigns are considered.


CLUB BTSYA: Start a club at your school to encourage participating and volunteering.


Publicity: Do you like to promote? Write press releases for newspapers and blogs about BTSYA and our outreach programs.


Other: If there is something that fits with our mission of empowering and inspiring women, families, and youth, we are always interested in the perspective of our youth volunteers. Talk to us to create a position that will be of benefit to all.


Our goal is to GROW people. We strive to make every volunteer position a positive and beneficial experience for the volunteer.
